Steve Knowles is Senior Counsel in Davis & Kuelthau’s Milwaukee office. A member of the firm’s Labor and Employment Team, Steve has more than 35 years of experience in private sector employment law. His experience includes representing manufacturing entities, insurance companies, financial organizations, hospitals and health maintenance organizations, telecommunications companies, retail stores, restaurants, private schools and colleges, and churches and religious organizations. He advises corporate employers on all aspects of employment law, including discipline and discharge, disability accommodations, discrimination and harassment issues, family and medical leave problems, restrictive covenants, protected concerted activities, wage-and-hour matters, and reductions in force. He prepares, interprets, and negotiates corporate policies, employee handbooks, employment agreements, non-competition agreements, separation and settlement agreements, and other contracts. Steve’s litigation experience includes Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FLSA, FMLA, First Amendment, and ERISA cases as well as claims under various state employment statutes, and he has represented employers in courts and administrative agencies throughout the Midwest.
Steve regularly presents programs on employment law before management and professional groups. Prior to joining the firm, his presentations included the Wisconsin Fair Employment Act’s requirements pertaining to arrest and conviction record discrimination, the management of employees with mental disabilities, and the requirements of Wisconsin’s concealed carry law. Steve was the co-author of an article entitled “Protected Concerted Activity in the Age of Social Media” in a recent issue of a national magazine published by the Defense Research Institute. He has also presented programs on all aspects of employment law for national and regional church leaders.
